Generosity That Falls Flat

Sometimes people don't appreciate our generosity. That sounds weird when you say it. The assumption about generosity is that it is welcomed and appreciated. But that is not always the case.

Being a Generous Mind is taking what you know and sharing it with others. But sometimes what we know isn't something they want to hear. In fact, many times it isn't what people want to hear. Generosity is a outward effort by one person to another. But it is not an individualized effort. For generosity to be effective it has to be recieved.

So what happens when people don't recieve our ideas. Well, we have a few choices. We can decide that we will not get hurt by them again and we stop being generous with them. Or we can continue to be generous and allow them more opportunities to accept it.

Being generous is thankless work most of the time. People take your ideas when you offer them but many times they don't thank you, they don't even give you credit many times.

So why should we do it? Well, we do it because we truely care about the person and we also care about the idea. If an idea is worth sharing, then it is worth some risk.

Do you care about the people in your life and the ideas you have to share them??

We are working more and more on being generous with our ideas. Right now we have a series of blogs that we would like to make sure you know about: - A blog challenging moms to be eco-friendly in small ways. - A blog resulting from our book Innovation in Mission. - A blog with articles, poems and tidbits that we have written. - A blog directory of ministries on YouTube.

We hope you enjoy!

Generosity and Personality

Something interesting happened the other day. I put a poll on my facebook page asking people what kept them from being generous with their ideas. I assumed that people struggle to be generous.

Funnything happened though . . . all the responders said that they had trouble NOT SHARING :).

I thought about this a while and wondered why I would assume it is hard for people to share and then why I would get such an opposite response. Here is a hypothesis . . . those that are drawn to the facebook world, are very social and are less likely to have trouble sharing what they know.

What do you think?

It isn't easy to be a generous mind . . . it takes a lot of time and intentionality. So we realized that we have not been very generous with many of our ideas. It is so hard to take the time and share them.

So it was Mindy's idea to create "Our Word Shop." Check out the collection of information we are collecting there.

Book Progress

Well, we are making progress on our next book project. We are taking one of Dr. Heibert's books and popularizing it for a new audience. It was so much fun to work with him on it before he passed away. He was so full of ideas and inspiration. We were just so priviledged to sit there and soak up all those years of thinking.

Be praying for us specifically that we will have endurance to focus our writing and our extra time on this project we have only 8 months to pull it all together and it can seem overwhelming at times.

Dark Secrets - New Hope

We would like to introduce you to another Generous Mind - Dawn Jewell. She works for MAI and is writing a book called Escaping the Devil's Bedroom.

This is going to be an incredible book about the lives of people caught in the sex trade and how God has freed so many from these horrible conditions.

The thing we like most about Dawn is her tenacity and focus. Even though this is a difficult topic and a challenge to write, she is covering it in prayer and moving forward.

Check out her blog (link above) and be praying that God will use her generousity in a special way.

A Generous Response

Recently a friend of mine shared some information with me that was a great help. He probably didn't know it would help me. HE was the one struggling through it . . . but it was a great help.

He thought enough about what he was learning to be generous - now what should my response be???

When I think about a generous response and what that looks like, I am pretty convicted. We have talked in the past on this blog about the need for us to be generous, but it goes even a step further when we say, "We must be generous in sharing how others have impacted us through their acts of generosity."

It only makes sense. How do you feed something unless you are giving it more kindling. You can only feed a generous mind by throwing more input and ideas onto the fire. So what should my response be?

I should share openly how the information has impacted me and the analysis and practical application that I have made with those ideas. That takes proactivity because I am busy and don't always have time. Also, when I see that person again, I may want to move on and talk about other things - but if I am committed to being a generous mind I will stop and share the impact of their special gift.

Generous Poetry

I would like to share this poem written by a friend of mine - Dr. Dee Walker. He is truely a generous mind.

"As I thought about my life and the people that God has brought into my life, I could not help but affirm that it is ALL His doing. It is nothing about me. So, I penned the following:"

What would I be without the Lord? A Lost sinner
Where would I be without the Lord? A wandering soul
Who would be my friend without the Lord? Who knows? More sinful men lost like me.

Without the Lord,
My achievements will be useless.
Without the Lord,
My life will be directionless.
Without the Lord,
My future will be hopeless.
Without the Lord,
My family will be in ceaseless torment.
Without the Lord,

He owns all of me; I am a Manager.
He owns all I have; I am a Manager.

Without the Lord,
I am surely NOTHING.

Sharing about Our Usefulness

We have been talking a lot recently about our usefulness and our calling. Many people say that every Christian has a calling, but others are more hesitant to say that God has called everyone to a special task.

So Mindy really processed this and wrote a great article called "God's Workbench"

Click on the title of this blog entry to read it.

As I was thinking the other night, I began to consider the different reasons for generosity. Take a minute to see what you think. Whoa - look at the bags under those eyes :) I guess I was up too late.

Talking in Pictures

Well, as we continue to interact about what it means to be a generous mind, why not also do it in pictures. We recently launched our own YouTube page:

We will be building a library of video clips about the concept of a generous mind and also linking to many other videos that talk about what it means to be generous.

Enjoy the tube!
