Yard Work Fueled by Thankfulness

I hate yard work. I don't say that lightly. As I wrote those words, I interrogated my emotions. Was I being dramatic? Was I taking on a victim mentality? Was it because of my allergies? After some thought I can honestly say that yard work falls into the "hate" category. But if you live in a country where private homes have yards, you don't have a lot of money to pay someone else to do it and you don't live in an apartment, yard work is part of your fate. Now its important to note that I know not everyone can relate to my feelings. I've met plenty of people who love to get out there on a Saturday and work on their yard. I envy those people and am thankful for them. So when I have put off the yard work for a while and a sunny Saturday comes along, you will see me out there sweating behind a lawn mower and fighting with bushes. Being Generous in Tragedy

When a tragedy strikes today we are immediately surrounded by words and images. We sit in our living rooms and stare at the screen insure of what to do. After all, you are sitting in relative luxury and looking into utter chaos and disaster that is only made possible by technology. So what do you do? Many of us pick up the phone or go to our computers and make a gift. Usually we do this for a mixture of reasons. We want to feel like we did something. We want to ease our guilt. We want to make a difference. The reasons go on and on. But as we are watching the images from this latest tragedy in Haiti, I would like to ask you to be generous in a different way. Here are some simple things that take a very different spin on how we as generous minds should response: If you don't know anything about Haiti, go to the CIA Factbook and get some understanding so that you can pray. Share what you have learned with a co-worker, someone in your family or someone at church. Pray with your family

Google's new email is generous with hard disk space and generous with search capacity. Why are they being generous? Well, there are probably several reasons. The main one is that they get the power of information. They know that if you give people space and ease of access they will communicate and share. If you put controls on them they will automatically be more reserved. Look at hotmail.com or yahoo.com which put limits on their mail. They did it to control costs but they drove away the interaction of the people. Generosity pays. The more people have rooom to interact with each other on their terms the more likely they are to be creative and generous.
